What's Dental Technician ?

Dental technicians have an exciting technical career as they assist in the process of manufacturing dental appliances including orthodontic fixtures, dentures and other appliances. Working in a laboratory, the technician uses molds and designs that are delivered to the offices of dentists to the specifications of the patients’ mouth.

There are many tasks that are common throughout the job including creating molds from casts that have been taken of the mouth of a patient, using elements like porcelain to create ‘teeth’ that can be used to replace missing teeth in the mouth or used in the creation of dentures, creating the design and framework for prosthetic devices used in the mouth, adjusting the color and shape of the teeth used in dentures and other appliances to create realistic renditions of the teeth in the mouth.

To become a dental technician, students are required to undertake a dental technician program through a college or technical school. Students have the option of completing a two year associates degree program, or a four year bachelor degree program that can allow the student to specialize in a specific type of dental technician field while increasing the earning potential.

Students can learn about dental technician programs in the local area by researching the colleges and technical schools that are available. Students should compare the length and costs of the program, the employment outlook and whether there are job placement services available once the program has been completed. Using these aspects, the student can choose the best program for the outlook of the career.

Education is combined with hands on experience to put the theory that has been learned to the test. The work experience will occur in a traditional laboratory and allow the student to meet the requirements to become licensed and certified in the state in which they are working.

How much can a dental technician earn? The median salary for dental technicians is ranked at $34,820 – which can increase with further education and training, specialization or through experience that has been obtained in the field working as a dental technician.
